He does it all.

He’s a serial entrepreneur, the go-to “business guy”, known on social media as SatsB, and today, we’re proud to call this Ryerson alumnus the Science Discovery Zone’s (SDZ) newly appointed President.

Sathish Bala has over 20 years of experience in business development and digital strategies. He built his first company, Spyder Design, in the final years of his undergraduate studies at Ryerson with two of his classmates and has since built and sold two other nationally recognized, digitally focused agencies in Toronto.  Sathish is also the founder and CEO of desiFEST, Canada’s largest South Asian music program designed to “build confidence and inspire youth by using music to break barriers and create opportunities”. This role is truly a testament to Sathish’s inclusive and passionate persona.

At the SDZ, Sathish consults with incubating members, but does so by drawing the introvert out of you. “He commands a room the same way he commands a stage: with passion. I am not business savy at all but that guy makes me feel like I’m invincible” says Leslie Capobianco, co-founder of Entropy Labs.

“Joining the SDZ is a dream come true” says Bala, “as it puts me back into the academic environment that I love. To be surrounded by ideas, hustle, passion and with SDZ specifically, working on science driven ideas that impact the world and [influence] potential change in the world is rewarding on so many levels.”

“My personal hope [for the SDZ] is that many of the ideas we are actively working on will move from research to incubation to funding and ultimately be in the market to help people who need the solution to live a better life”, says Bala. “While we are a new zone, our potential to deliver world-class solutions is on-par with the Ryerson Zone Learning approach and I am excited for the future.”

Outside of the SDZ and his full time gig, Sathish is always keeping busy. He’s currently hosting and producing a 5 TIPS MASTER CLASS video blog enriched with enticing conversations, success stories, entrepreneurial experiences – and you’re guaranteed a good laugh! Sathish is also one of five recipients of Ryerson’s 2017 Alumni Award of Distinction, to be celebrated at the annual Ryerson Dinner on October 14, 2017.

We are looking forward to all that Sathish will accomplish both with the SDZ and with his own ventures!
